The Power and Presence of the Change Agent

As system leaders we often witness power at work and we feel the unexplained and unnamed forces which move the group towards or away from its desired goals. The presence we have as a change agent is an important factor in our effectiveness, as we work to support our systems to bring about their desired results.

As system leaders when we create interventions we intervene in groups, teams and systems and we intervene in a lumpy soup in which power is a key ingredient. But what of our own power? What role does our power play and the impact we have? How do we experience our own power and how does it impact upon success or failure? And how do we maintain our ability to thrive?

Intended outcomes:

  • To provide space and time for the group, as system leaders of change, to consider their own presence and how impactful they are, beyond the use of their technical expertise.
  • To focus upon how we develop our relationship and use of power over time.
  • To explore how our relationship and views about our own power shape, both consciously and subconsciously, our practice
  • To consider how to strengthen the professional presence in service of the system
  • To consider how this work relates to ensuring we are able to thrive.
